Activities

Two members on a day trip shopping in France.
We believe that people can enjoy almost any leisure pursuit, provided that:

• Staff know the individual, and know how he/she might express pleasure, fear and so on.

• It is not too complicated or vastly beyond a person’s ability.

• Staff and helpers think through the activity carefully.

• Appropriate individual support is available.

Unfortunately most people are unaware of the range of possible leisure activities which the physically disabled might do and enjoy.

Often staff and helpers may offer up a menu of activities if a person is unclear on how they should spend their time with us.

We have found that many sighted people believe that certain activities are impossible for blind or partially sighted people, without trying to discover if this is true.

Staff consider the risk, what help or training may be needed to take part, or how we can adapt the activity.

Many people have always been told to do a particular activity ("It will do you good" routine) and are never given a choice. Alternativly people may lack the communication skills to explain that they would really wish to do something else with someone different.

At The Point members can take part in a wide range of activities and visits.

Members can get involved in craft work, cooking and many other activities in the Centre. Staff will also help members with meal planning budgeting and shopping.

There is a gym and staff will help members work out suitable fitness routines and make sure that they follow them correctly. There is also a pool table for the less energetic member but the competition can be fierce.

The Point’s buses are constantly busy taking members on visits to many different venues such as the Bluebell Railway, Amberley Museum and the London Eye. Our members also visit sporting venues such as Southampton football Club and Wimbledon.

There are visits to the theatres in the area and occasional trips to the West End for special shows. Some members enjoy visiting Fontwell or Hove Greyhound racing and the meetings at Goodwood are always popular.

The members also go regularly to swimming baths and enjoy skating at the Spectrum. In summer there are also days out water-skiing and sailing.

The wide range of events and activities offered can be seen by clicking on our diary page.
